KB2655992 Update fails with error "Code 80070570 - Windows Update encountered an unknown error."
I have tried installing KB2655992 multiple times and it continues to fail on my PC. I have a Windows 7, SP1 installation, 64 bits. All other updates install without issue. I have tried the MS 'FixIt' process with no success, and furthermore, I have tried the 'reset MS Update' fixes involving the renaming of one of the Update directories, starting stopping services, etc. I still get the error and am unable to install this patch. I've attached pictures of the dialog failures -- I'll post the log tail in the next message. Any help appreciated. Robert Burns

Hi, I suggest you can try to manually download this update from Microsoft Download Center and install it in Clean Boot mode to check the result. In addition, here is similar threads for your reference: Problem with update KB2655992 (on several computers) Hope this helps. Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Vincent, Thanks for the advice. I gave that a try and got a completely different error ("Installer encountered an error: 0x8007043c This service cannot be started in Safe Mode"). I've attached a screenshot. From the error code & screen it appears that for some reason this update is not designed to be done in 'safe mode'? Any other advice? Thanks, Robert Burns

Hi, Please check whether you are trying to install it in Safe Mode or not? In safe mode, Windows installer service is disabled. If so, please try to install it in Clean boot mode to check the result. Regards Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Vincent, Quite right -- I mistook 'Safe Mode' for 'Clean Mode'. I followed the instructions in your previous link and it failed in a different way, as shown in the attached dialog picture, without any additional information. Next steps? Thanks, Robert Burns

Hi Robert, According to this, please try the following: 1. Run the Microsoft Fixit and see how it works. Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working 2. Try System Update Readiness tool by referring to What is the System Update Readiness Tool?. 3. Run System File Checker tool and see how it works. If issue persists, please upload windowsupdate.log file to Windows Live SkyDrive for further research. Hope this helps. Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support Vincent, Thanks for the tips -- here's what I observed: 1. I had previously run this before without success. For completeness, I re-ran it and the result is that it says it fixes the problem, but the update still fails. 2. Ran this update -- observed that it stayed on the 'Installing' screen for quite some time (at least 45 minutes) without any reported progress (e.g. 0%), and then all of a sudden claimed success. I then tried the update via windows-update and it failed with the same error. 3. Did this from an Administrator command prompt, and here's what happened: C:\Windows\system32>cd \temp C:\temp>sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 12% complete. Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. C:\temp>sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Another servicing or repair operation is currently running.Wait for this to finish and run sfc again. The Windows-Update then failed again, so no go. I'll work on uploading the windows log to a SkyDrive -- how can I give you permissions to view the file? Thanks again, Robert Burns

Hi, You can refer to this to update the files. Use SkyDrive to upload collected files and post screen shot/picture. (Updated: 1/16/2012) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65/ Regards, Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Vincent, Yes, I was referring to step four of your attached link, specifically the part where you make a link private -- I don't feel comfortable making my entire update log available to the public, so I've asked for an ID/name/email address I can use for making the file available to a specific person and not the entire world. Thanks, Robert Burns

Hi, Given this situation, you can try to just post the error message from the log file. You can refer to How to read the Windowsupdate.log file. In addition, I would like to check whether you have tried the steps in this threads Problem with update KB2655992 (on several computers) to manually install them the network cable unplugged? Vincent, Interestingly enough, I went to update one more time before trying you suggestions and it worked! As you can see from the screen capture, that it has failed consistently every time except today. Very curious as there are no other updates which occurred between failure and success. Is it possible that the update itself was changed to be more robust? Any ideas? Thanks, Robert Burns

Hi, Glad to hear the update has been installed. Dont know what happened, but it is interesting. Maybe some system or this update setting has been changed. Hope this issue will not occur. Regards, Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support
